Top 4 Tile Trends for 2017

As the year is slowly coming to an end and we’re all starting to feel that Christmas spirit, we’ve also started looking into what 2017 might bring in terms of interior trends and styling preferences.

Instead of making our own predictions, we decided to speak to an insider. Our expert, Sophie Warren-Smith, is a journalist and interior stylist with whom we have worked on many editorial pieces over the last years. Here are her 4 top picks for the 2017 tile trends.

Every season new trends emerge that help guide us in what to buy for the coming months. It used to be that interior trends were a good few years behind fashion forecasts, but no more. These days they run closely together, mainly thanks to the Internet and social media. As soon as a collection hits the runway you will find images of it on online within hours. This enables interior designers and buyers to get quickly on the case to bring you beautiful, on-trend pieces. This exciting new era means you can browse the aisles in a fashion store and then pop into an interiors shop and see similar colours and patterns. Trends run seasonally and are ahead, so here’s a sneak peek of the big trends for 2017.

  1. SHAPES & SIZES

The large brick format

This year in the world of tiles it’s all about the ‘kit-kats’. Gone are the days of metro and traditional bricks – kit-kats are the slightly thinner and longer version of the ever popular format. Be on the lookout for the new size, 228 x 75mm, giving them a more sophisticated and elegant look.

Creative tiling patterns

In 2017 be sure to opt for innovative, exciting tiling patterns. Instead of the traditional brickbond pattern, try the herringbone style – a layout that’s set to be big in the coming year.

Original Style’s Artworks collection, which has recently been updated, already reflects all these trends, so have a look on their website and Pinterest boards for inspiration. Available in a wide variety of colours they will look striking on a bathroom wall or used as a kitchen splashback. There are also new colours to check out in classic tones; Chancel Grey, Westminster Grey and Vintage White.

Hexagons

If you’re planning to be bold with shapes, 2017 has lots in store for you. Consider some stunning hexagons – they are going to be seen everywhere this coming season and they suit all styles of interiors. Yes, even the classic Victorian interiors where you can use Original Style’s hexagonal Victorian Floor Tiles, paired with staggeringly beautiful traditional borders. You can also choose more modern, urban designs in sophisticated plain greys or iridescent tones.

Looking for the best of both worlds? Pick traditional terracottas – they are also making a spectacular comeback and are available in the hexagon format too.

For an eye-catching splashback choose one of Original Style’s gorgeous mosaics. Selene is a great design to use – it’s crafted from glass and has a stunning shimmering effect, but as OS have announced launching plenty of new exciting collections in 2017, be sure to keep an eye on those. Just between the two of us: expect lots of gorgeous hexagonal mosaics!

The beauty of mosaic tiles is that they can be added to both flat and curved surfaces, making them ideal for shower rooms. Futura Sepia and Futura Zirconia are two textured hexagon mosaics in different colour ways – they have a wonderful tactile quality, perfect if you want to create a stand-out wall in a bathroom or kitchen.

  1. JEWEL-LIKE TONES

Colour trends are driven by Pantone. They are the market leader when it comes to all things colour, setting the trends every year. 2017 will be all about rich, deep, vibrant greens and sultry blues, with names like Kale, Greenery, Lapis Blue and Niagara. You can find similar shades amongst Original Style’s products – check out the Victorian Green tiles (Artworks range) which are a true colour match for the green trend, richly toned and available in a glossy finish. These are very special products which allow you to choose from a field tile, metro tile or a large brick and add a variety of mouldings with beautiful decorative designs.

Or, if the jungle colour scheme isn’t for you, try moody blues instead. Choose tiles in Pantone’s Lapis Blue and Niagara – two blues on the opposite end of the scale. Lapis Blue is a strong colour – the Baroque Blue tile from the Artworks collection will work well here, just as the Winchester tile with the exact same name. Niagara on the other hand is more of a grey-blue, very similar to the Dulux Colour of 2017, which is called Denim Drift. To achieve this look try Original Style’s Filigree Blue Sky Blue, Sea Blue, Midnight Blue on Brilliant white patterned tile from the Tapestry Collection for a good match.  All these tiles are perfect for adding some on trend colour to a bathroom or kitchen.

However, if these colours feel too bold, there are some more neutral tones that Pantone recommends, such as a soft pink called Pale Dogwood. A good match for this is the Clover Field tile from the Winchester Tile Company. There’s also a lovely subtle nude called Hazelnut, for which the Pietra Di Firenze camel floor tiles are a perfect match (check out the Tileworks range).

  1. PATTERNS

Pattern is big right now, again in both fashion and interiors. You will see modern zig-zags resembling the Art Deco style, some micro-florals and Moroccan inspirations as well. Tiles are an excellent way to add instant colour and pattern to a scheme and – quite frankly – there’s nothing more stunning than walking into a kitchen or bathroom and seeing a statement floor.

There is one main rule of thumb – keep your units neutral so the floor is the main focal point. This also works for a bathroom – keep the sanitary ware simple. Keep everything balanced or it will be too overpowering.

If tiling the whole floor seems too much then consider a splashback instead. The perfect tiles for this season are the new designs from the Odyssey Collection; Saltram, Lewtrenchard and Knightshayes. Each one comes in two colour ways with borders and corner tiles that complement. The simple colour ways make them ideal for creating a modern look whilst still adding a decorative element to a room with the intricate pattern. Made from dry pressed ceramic, they are hard-wearing and they can be used on walls and floors in any high traffic areas like kitchens, hallways, bathrooms and conservatories.

  1. CLASS & SCALE

Large format tiles are becoming increasingly popular. They are great for making a room appear bigger and if you choose light-toned tiles then they will also lighten up a room that lacks in natural light. Natural stone replicas – such as marble-effects – are both classy and timeless.

If your budget is limited opt for the Bianco Paonazzetto glazed porcelain tiles in natural, available in five different sizes (with 900 x 900mm being the largest). They offer the beauty of marble but without the cost, and they also fit into the increasingly popular return of natural materials. The finished effect is simply stunning and certainly recreates a luxurious hotel chic style. Team with shades of grey and gold fixtures for that extra bit of zing.
